Abstract: The article presents the results of a study of several aspects of reading by younger and older teenagers: quantitative, qualitative and comparative. The author examined the material and presented a summary that includes the typology of argumentation used by teenagers with a number of examples of direct speech. There is a list of the first three most popular books among pupils of 7, 8 and 9 grades of St. Petersburg. The new data are presented by themselves, illustrating the reading habits of this generation of teenagers, and they are compared to the results of the similar analysis made by the author 20 years ago. The article discusses the attitudes and expectations of teachers and librarians, so the question is brought to the attention of the reader with brief extracts from discussions in the round table for teachers, librarians and parents called «Teenagers’ romance in the mirror of the century: what to read today?», held in the program of St. Petersburg International book salon on May 27, 2017. The article discusses the trends in reading by younger and older teenagers (13 and 15) in the context of today's freedom of choice for independent reading. It provides broad and narrow methodological and pedagogical insights about the prospects of work with this generation of students. The article is recommended for teachers of literature, philologists and teachers of pedagogical universities.
