Abstract: The article presents the summary of the lesson on the theory of literature for philology students on the material of the representative novel of the modern writer V. A. Sharov «Return to Egypt» (2013). The article is made in line with literary comparative studies as a current area of science. The article develops the concept of «literary reception» and describes its modern forms. We manifest traditional types of reception, such as quotations, reference to the plots of classical works and biographies of the classics; reminiscences, imitation, literary apprenticeship, etc.; new types of reception are described: intext, autodialog, composition as a quote, perifrase; their functions are analyzed in an artistic text. We are discovering a new, multicomponent type of reception «finishing the classics», presented in the novels by V. A. Sharov (1952–2018). The author of the novel «Return to Egypt» shows the history of Russia as a tragedy using allusions to the biblical storyline of the book «Exodus» and the literary and biographical heritage of N. V. Gogol. The key feature of this type is the «finishing of» N. V. Gogol's poem «The Dead Souls» by the characters the novel, carried out on several levels of the text: the motive of the family of the descendants of the classic is introduced; new theater plays by N. V. Gogol, whose participants are the characters of the novel, are characterized by a synopsis of the second and third volumes of «The Dead Souls», and literary essays are written by the characters of the novel about N. V. Gogol. The article presents the analysis of data of receptive forms and their functional characteristics. The methodological basis of the work is the methodological ideas and principles of the authors of receptive concepts: V. Iser, Yu. I. Mineralov, A. I. Zherebin, G. M. Vasilyeva and some others. The lesson consists of three parts: the lecture word, the analytical work of students with fragments of texts, the conclusions of the work done.
