Abstract: Two writers' autobiographies - Down and out in Paris and London by George Orwell and Enemies of Promise by Cyril Connolly - are taken to analyze the relation of documentary and fictional elements in autobiographical writing; the specific features of writers' autobiography in the English literature of the 1930-s are elucidated.
