Abstract: The book of poems by A. Sen-Senkov “Stone Fetus” (2023) is considered in the context of the dynamic changes of the image of Ekaterinburg in literary works of the 19th–21st centuries. The study aims to identify the techniques of verbal reconstruction of architecture images, their functions in a literary work and the impact of these images on the cultural memory of the urban community. Methodologically, the research is based on the ideas of intermediality and interaction between art forms, the theory of socio-cultural aspects of art, and the principles of comparative-historical and semiotic approaches. The works of D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak reproduce the merchant image of Ekaterinburg, which flourished during the “gold rush” of the mid-19th century and gradually deteriorated by the end of the century. During the Civil War in the Urals, N. Nikitin contrasts the bourgeois comfort of merchant mansions and the hovels of the factory outskirts. The years of the first five-year plan are associated with the rise of industrialization and constructivist architecture and with the global nature of social plans for the birth of a new “megacity” – Sverdlovsk (Mayakovsky). During the Thaw, a cozy image of green avenues, quiet residential areas, and the smooth flow of time was formed in literature. Boris Ryzhy reflected the post-Soviet era of Sverdlovsk-Ekaterinburg, creating an elegiac image of gradually degrading working-class suburbs with an invariably resounding theme of death (both personal and of the Soviet period as a whole). The book of poems by Sen-Senkov “Stone Fetus,” published in 2023, is dedicated to one of the constructivist monuments that became a “derelict” one. “Derelict buildings” demonstrate both sides of the Soviet industrialization project: both creative and repressive. If constructivist architectural monuments create a positive image of the past in the collective memory, then an abandoned kindergarten / orphanage, standing near to the city prison, protects against the idealization of the past and reminds us of unspoken collective traumas.
