Abstract: The practical research material of this study encompasses non-fictional texts written by I. A. Bunin, which became part of the cultural space of Russia at the turn of the 20th century, and by the present time have largely been read and interpreted multiple times. Along with the non-fictional texts of other authors of the Silver Age and the Russian diaspora, the writer’s texts constitute an integral part of the discipline “History of Russian Literature” studied by university students of philological profiles. At the same time, due to the limited academic hours allocated in the curriculum, less attention is paid to publicistic writings than to fiction texts. This situation does not reject the necessity of studying journalistic heritage, but it requires additional efforts on the part of the teacher. The article draws attention to the fact that the modern younger generation are readers of the digital age who are accustomed to new online ways of finding, presenting and perceiving material. This implies the need to search for new methods and techniques of work with classical texts that would heighten students’ interest in them. The article suggests a media reading format fully meeting the demands of time and the processes of digitalization of living space, which allows increasing the media literacy of students while analyzing journalistic discourse: their ability to perceive, critically evaluate and interpret what they have read in the necessary historical and cultural context and to create their own media production, which can be used in the process of learning. Media reading is defined by the author of the article as students’ comprehension of texts with the help of, on the basis of, and within the context of mass media and communication technologies. Bunin’s non-fictional prose reveals a powerful media educational potential, based on the facts of the writer’s creative biography and aesthetic and socio-political positions that allows considering it in this format. First and foremost, it is the writer’s long-standing connection with the world of newspapers and magazines: his direct involvement in editorial work, promotion of publications, and publicistic activity on the pages of both Russian and foreign print media. No less important is the fact that Bunin’s creative development took place in the same vein with his literary, journalistic, and literary-critical activities. It is concluded that the media reading of Bunin’s non-fictional works, used as a methods technology alongside with the traditional literary text analysis, facilitates the formation of interactive collaborative relationships between teacher and student, revitalizes the education process, and contributes to the development of students’ media culture. This technology can be used as a supplement tool in the practice of teaching Russian literature in universities and secondary schools.
