Abstract: The article describes the stages of development of problem-based tasks built on the material of multimodal texts containing precedent phenomena. The study is interdisciplinary in character. The methods of investigation include the method of problem-based learning, the method of integrated learning, and the descriptive and comparative methods. The research results include problem-based tasks on the material of precedent phenomena incorporated in multimodal texts, methodological foundation and description of such problem-based tasks, and their place in the system of professional language training of philology students. The article comprises two parts. The first part presents variants of the actions of a creator of problem-based tasks for students pursuing a professional linguistic course in a foreign language. It also deals with the issues of the methods of construction of problem-based tasks on the basis of multimodal text material. The second part contains illustrations of certain linguistic procedures and steps of linguistic analysis of precedent phenomena. 18th century cartoons by James Gillray and historical canvases by Benjamin West and Pierre-Nicolas Legrand de Lérant were chosen as practical illustration multimodal material. One of the cartoons is connected with the death of Admiral Lord Nelson; the second cartoon is associated with the death of General Wolf. The historical canvases are devoted to the death of Admiral Nelson and General Wolf. These objects were chosen due to their multiple intertextual links and the fact that these works are not only devoted to the precedent situations but have turned into multimodal precedent texts themselves. This makes it possible to work out the ways for creating interdisciplinary connections while realizing the programs of professional language training of philology students.
